ELECTIVE: PORTFOLIO

About this class

This is an optional elective course for the Summer Art and Design Program 2023. This course cannot be taken separately. (Students get to select from four majors: Graphic Design, Fashion Design, Interior Design and Painting, and Printmaking)

This course welcomes individuals that want to explore the creative processes of creating a body of work, ranging from traditional to conceptual processes. This course is also ideal for students preparing a portfolio and is considering studying Design or Fine Arts.

This course will go through the production of a portfolio and further discuss the ways to enrich the viewer’s engagement through the final touches, i.e writing, and photography. The course will elaborate on the specific requirements that pertain to VCUartsQatar. It will give an idea of the content needed to build a portfolio for an application. The work that the students will produce from this course could potentially form a part of their portfolio submissions.

Nia Alexander Campbell
Lecturer

Nia Alexander Campbell is an artist and writer from Richmond, Virginia. She received a BFA in Painting & Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University with a minor in Art History (emphasizing in Black art and cinema) and an MFA in Interdisciplinary Design from VCUarts Qatar.

Nia’s creative practice explores the ways collage, writing, and traditional & digital painting mediums can be used to tell stories through design. She believes that storytelling in any medium can function as an excellent way to combat ignorance, give a voice to the otherwise unheard, and bridge the divides we see in our world today. Her subject matter explores themes of the history, mental health, and the experiences of underrepresented groups of people. She often draws inspiration from her experiences as an African American woman raised in the U.S. and her numerous experiences abroad.
