Equipment & Facilities Technician (non-benefited)

Summary

The Innovative Media Studio (IMS) is a creative studio dedicated to technology and media innovation research. The IMS seeks an Equipment and Facilities Technician who will oversee: daily operational duties for the studios including inventory management including lending processes, maintenance for the ongoing functionality of the IMS equipment room, and general oversight and maintenance for the IMS studios and equipment. The candidate will promote all IMS facilities, supporting students and faculty with basic and moderate levels of technical instruction. The position reports to the Head of Innovative Media Studios, under the general direction of VCUarts Qatar Library.

This position is temporary and is paid on an hourly basis without any additional allowances or benefits. In line with the State of Qatar hiring guidelines, applicants must hold a valid Qatar residence permit (Qatar ID) to be considered for this position.

Major Activities & Essential Functions

  • Oversees the operational aspects of the IMS daily, including, but not limited to circulation of equipment, procurement, online booking systems, statistical collection and analysis, activity reporting, and maintenance.
  • Maintains a diverse and updated equipment inventory implementing policy and procedures to ensure asset security and inventory accuracy, as well as, maintains the Equipment Handbook stating current lending policies for the IMS website.
  • Creates content for the Equipment Handbook, adding technical instructions on IMS equipment, and tracks equipment usage throughout its lifetime. Manages new acquisitions and works with the administration on the procurement and shipping details.
  • Provides basic technical information and instruction to students and faculty, and oversees the daily scheduling and maintenance of all IMS facilities. Assessing studio functionality and tracking usage.
  • Represents IMS in the absence of the Head and Coordinator of IMS by conducting tours, assisting in IMS excursions, social media managing or departmental projects, as well as, supports IMS team in demonstrations and workshops including prep and set-up equipment for classes and events as necessary.
  • Manages, trains, and leads a team of student workers for equipment checkout duties, social media posting, and studio monitoring, and assists the IMS team in ordering supplies for facilities and equipment as required, and liaisons to IT to manage software requests/ updates as well as IMS website updates.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in design/interactive media is required and demonstrable, relevant technical experience in photography and time-based media.
  • The ability to categorize inventory catalogs in spreadsheet and web-based platforms.
  • Demonstrated research skills to stay abreast of the latest developments in equipment, hardware, and software.
  • A thorough understanding and ability to provide basic tutoring with various software and applications. Software may include, but is not limited to, those in support of video, photography, sound, animation, VR, and gaming.
