About this class

The course is to teach oil painting techniques according to students own preferences.

Class Outline

In the advanced painting class, we will explore the possibilities of painting the projects that each student has in mind. We will work on achieving individual projects according to reference pictures the students bring in. We also take into consideration if the student needs additional skills to achieve the chosen projects and do the necessary training according to that need. 

Materials needed

  • Titanium white*
  • Mars or Lamp black*
  • Burnt umber
  • Raw umber*
  • Burnt sienna* or Transparent Red Oxide
  • Ultramarine blue* (not french)
  • Phtalo blue*
  • Viridian green
  • Lemon Yellow*
  • Cadminum Red
  • Alizarin Red permanent*
  • Linseed oil- bleached
  • Carbon paper*
  • Fixative spray*
  • Gesso*
  • Fine sandpaper*
  • Table top easel (For non-VCUarts Qatar students)
  • Palette knife, small*
  • Palette with no holes or indentations- Must be for Oil or acrylics use
  • Brush set, both synthetic and natural. Get a small set of each, containing different sizes.
  • A cheap set of acrylics paint for underpaint purposes. Student quality ok.
  • Glass jar or tin to hold brushes,
  • Soft cloths, reusable. Like old t-shirts or cut-off sheets.. Please cut in small pieces before coming to class.
  • Apron

On occasions, there may be some more materials to be bought and brought in if and when advised by the instructor.

Behnaz Larsen
Lecturer

Behnaz is an Iranian American artist. She works mainly with oil and her work can be described as allegories. She is a long term resident of Qatar but exhibits mainly in Denmark and Germany. Behnaz has been teaching art and leading workshops for six years with adult students from diverse cultures.
