Summary

We are seeking a Librarian to join our team at the Art and Design Library, reporting to the Head of Teaching, Learning, and Strategic Initiatives. This temporary, in-person role involves approximately 20 hours per week and is ideal for individuals with a strong background in library sciences and a passion for teaching and learning in a higher education setting. The successful candidate will develop teaching materials and support our public service initiatives, helping to expand our reach and enrich the student experience. We are looking for someone who can bring unique skills or experiences that align with our strategic plans and who is open to learning and embracing our commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), contributing to a welcoming and supportive environment for all community members.

This is a non-sponsored hourly position with no benefits based on a maximum of 20 hours per week. Applicants must have a valid residence permit and currently live in Qatar.

Major Activities & Essential Functions

Public Services:

  • Contributes to the Art and Design Library’s goal to develop programming and/or strategic events that recognize and celebrate faculty achievements.
  • Works in collaboration with the Head of Teaching, Learning, and Strategic Initiatives and the Public Services and Outreach Coordinator, to support the on-going development of the library’s Peer Research Consultant Program and related assessment activities.
  • Participates in library assessment activities related to Public Services and actively contributes recommendations for improvements or operational changes.
  • Contributes to the planning and execution of events as needed.

Teaching/Learning:

  • Creates and maintain customized subject and course guides (Libguides).
  • Creates online instruction resources, digital materials, videos/tutorials, etc. and promote those resources and materials to students, faculty, and staff.
  • Contributes to the development of First Year Experience initiatives through targeted projects and deliverables.
  • Collaborates with the Head of Teaching, Learning, and Strategic Initiatives, on dedicated assessment projects related to Teaching and Learning and Public Services, including the review of data and feedback regarding library instruction effectiveness, student satisfaction, and faculty satisfaction.
  • In consultation/collaboration with the Head of Teaching, Learning, and Strategic Initiatives, delivers workshops that feature library resources and support the teaching and learning experiences of faculty and students.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Monitors trends in academic libraries, specifically within an art and design context, to identify emerging needs, resources, tools, etc., that may enhance the Art and Design Library’s teaching and learning programming and public services.
  • Develops professional skills through personal study, workshops, and participation in local meetings and continuing library profession/education opportunities., where possible.
  • Attends monthly All Faculty and Staff meetings and Art and Design Library meetings, where appropriate.
  • Assumes project manager role, when assigned.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • ALA accredited Master’s Degree (or ALA accepted foreign equivalency) in Library Science (MLS, MSLS, MLIS). MLS students in their final year, with documented paraprofessional library experience, may also be considered.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience using print and electronic library resources and conducting research in a higher education context.
  • Demonstrated experience in providing instruction or delivering presentations to adult learners.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in online platforms, tools, and technologies specific to academic libraries and/or higher education (LibGuides, Canvas, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in an academic library environment.
  • Understanding of issues and trends in information literacy and services in an academic library.
  • Understanding of pedagogy and best practices in information literacy instruction.
  • Experience in the use of assessment methods.
  • Strong capacity to foster positive working relationships.
  • Knowledge of the Library of Congress Classification system.
  • Familiarity with citation styles.

Skills & Experience

  • Effective time, organizational, and project management skills with the ability to work independently and as a member of a collaborative team.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated computer literacy skills, notably in Excel.
  • Demonstrated experience or a commitment to fostering a diverse working and learning environment is required as a staff member at VCUQatar.
