Alice in Wonderland, written in 1865 by Lewis Carroll is considered to be one of the most influential literary works of all time. Originally titled Alice’s Adventures Under Ground, this fanciful story of a little girl tumbling down a rabbit hole into a fantasy world of strange characters and talking animals, has been an endless source of inspiration for creative minds. Lewis Carroll’s beautifully rendered illustrations have inspired countless others over the ages. This includes the surrealist illustrations of the classic by Salvador Dali and the visually captivating illustrations by Yayoi Kusama, who called herself “modern Alice in Wonderland”.

The library book display titled, ‘Alice in the Art World’ explores the art and design that has been inspired by Alice in Wonderland. The display also includes books highlighting the scale property in art and design as well as magic and fantasy, all recurrent motifs in the story.

The origami roses that are a part of the display were made by the freshmen students (Class of 2026) for the new student orientation activity by the VCU arts Qatar Libraries. Students were asked to write about “who are you?” and “where are you going?” on the origami papers prior to folding them to roses.

Come, jump down the rabbit hole into the wonderful world of art and design curiouser and curiouser!
