A look back at “Echoes”, VCUarts Qatar alumna Bouthayna Al-Muftah’s first solo exhibition, which took place at Project Space 12 at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, in Qatar, from July 11 to September 10, 2018.
“Echoes” focused on the recollection of Qatari cultural memories and re-visualized a traditional game reflecting on rapid social and cultural changes.
Bouthayna interrogates stories and practices from Qatari cultural heritage by archiving collective memories and personal encounters using various artistic media including drawing, printmaking and installation.
“Echoes” was a prolongation of Al-Muftah’s ongoing research on the recollection of memories and stories that she documents as a continuous autobiography based on personal encounters and family stories.
In “Echoes”, she reflected on the rapid social and cultural changes that have taken place in her surroundings in a short period of time. She used the space to evoke shared local memories and question current local cultural practices visibly influenced by technology with growing focus on individualism.
Bouthayna’s recent exhibitions include “Contemporary Art Qatar” (Berlin, 2018), 20.20.20 (Doha, 2017), “Currents” (Doha, 2017), “Here, There” (Doha, 2014) and the “Mini Art Exhibition” (Doha, 2013).
