Five Exhibitions are Taking Place Around Qatar This Summer Featuring Works by our Alumni and Faculty

“Remember When…” by VCUarts Qatar alumna Ghada Al-Khater and Georgetown University in Qatar alumnus Mubarak Al-Thani is taking place at Art 29 Gallery at the W Doha Hotel.

The exhibition contains a mix of mediums, materials and styles ranging from paintings and sculpture and audio/video installations. The artists take the viewer through a journey of the most memorable and pivotal events that took place in the past year, as seen and experienced through their eyes. These events have reshaped the country and society, paving the way for a new age of forbearance, and redefining the cultural identity of Qatar in the post blockade era.

Highly regarded in the art and design community for his subtle yet provocative exploration of the creative and often complicated links between religion, culture, and social justice, alumnus Othman Khunji is presenting his solo exhibition entitled, “Deconstructing the Sacred”, as a response to populist narratives that misrepresent religious practices, misinterpret social customs, and misconstrue cultural behaviors.

“Echoe​s”, by alumna Bouthayna Al-Muftah, at Mathaf, Arab Museum of Modern Art, is a prolongation of her ongoing research on the archiving of memories and stories that she artistically documents.

In Project Space 12 Al-Muftah interrogates the process of recollection of Qatari cultural memory in the context of the present culture. In this experiment, she re-visualizes a traditional game where she distinctively reflects on the rapid social and cultural changes that have taken place in her surroundings in a short period of time.

“Dual Inspirations” the exhibition by the 2017/18 Artists in Residence at the Garage Gallery at Doha Fire Station explores the intellectual concepts that revolve around inspiration as a platform. Over a nine-month residency program 18 artists, eight of whom are VCUarts Qatar faculty or alumni, were engaged in rich monthly debates with curators and researchers that helped to shape a diverse assemblage of artistic approaches from inception all the way to their final form as artworks.

The VCUarts Qatar faculty or alumni whose works are on display at “Dual Inspirations” are: Fatima Mohammed, Islam Shehab, Ryan Browning, Rachel Leah Cohn, Wajiha Pervez, Yousef Bahzad, Aisha Al Fadlala, and Shouq Mana Al Mana.

Part 4 of the 50 x 50 Exhibition at Al Markhiya Gallery at Building 5 at Katara Art Center includes works by VCUarts Qatar alumni Ahmed Al Jufairi, Fatima Mohammed, and Maryam Faraj Al Suwaidi. Works by Fatima are also currently on display at the Fire Station Garage Gallery. 

The artists created three 50 by 50 artworks in any medium and in any theme of their choice.

Part 4 of 50 x 50 will run until September 5 and is free and open to the public.
