VCUarts Qatar Graphic Design and MFA in Design alumna and Art Foundation Assistant Professor Hadeer Omar will be taking part in the inaugural Tasweer Photo Festival Qatar, which is taking place from March 24 to May 30.
Hadeer was commissioned by the festival to activate and transform three key areas of the Alkoot Fort space in collaboration with VCUarts Qatar’s Sonic Jeel artistic collective, VCUArts Qatar’s Associate professors Michael Hersrud and Simone Muscolino, and light designer Katia Kolovea who is based in Greece.
The installation titled, "And Thereafter”, a video projection, light and audio installation, will be on display at Alkoot Fort throughout the festival.
Together they drew upon the area surrounding the fort, as well as Souq Waqif and the Msheireb district, as sources of inspiration for "And Thereafter”, weaving together traditional and contemporary aspects of daily life, translating and transforming them into surreal immersive environments.
"And Thereafter” heightens the lived experiences of the souq through contemporary captured images and sounds, as well as incorporating archival footage. Video projections and soundscapes play in asynchronous loops creating a new generative experience that evolves over time, celebrating contemporary Qatari heritage and all that it entails wrapped into a dreamscape of experiences.
“And Thereafter” is curated by Maryam Hassan Al-Thani.
Tasweer will feature a dynamic and interconnected program of exhibitions, awards, commissions, collaborations, presentations and workshops that draw innovative international photography together with photographers and photographic communities in Qatar and the Western Asia and North Africa region.
