A VCUarts Qatar Fashion Design student and two Painting + Printmaking alumni were involved in the “The World is Watching Musalsalat” exhibition which is taking place at the Media Majlis at Northwestern University in Qatar.

The exhibition (Musalsalat is the Arabic word for ‘series’, as in TV series) investigates the impacts of musalsalat, the serial television dramas produced in the Arab world, and increasingly outside it, which dominate television schedules during Ramadan.

The exhibition includes work by Fashion Design student Tiaba Nazir, and Painting + Printmaking alumni Salma Award and Maha Nasr, who contributed their valuable art and design skills.

Tiaba was the Costume Designer for the project. She also set up a scene from a 2007 show called “Al-Malik Farouk” (King Farouk), dressed his table from the same scene, and designed the wall behind the desk, which was based on images from that scene.

The World is Watching Musalsalat” invites attendees to consider their television drama viewing and ask how much control do makers and viewers of television drama have. It also provides a behind-the-scenes look at the drama, money, power and futures of the lucrative cultural industry.

Tiaba spent four months working on the project. It required considerable research and time spent sourcing and acquiring garments, objects and props from collections, museums and from individuals locally and internationally.

“Working on this project I learned about museums, exhibitions, object restoration and storage techniques, and how to research an object before exhibiting it,” she explained in an article in Inside the Majlis, which accompanied the exhibition. “This project was more than just an exhibition—it was a collaboration between creative fields ranging from design, fashion, interiors, graphics, lighting, and exhibition development.”

Painting + Printmaking alumni Salma Awad and Maha Nasr were invited to take part in the opening reception. They held a live screen print for visitors by printing the “Musalsalat” on pouches. Maha worked and prepared the design, and Salma exposed the design and prepared the print screens for the event.

“It was a pleasure for me to be part of an artistic initiative and represent myself as an artist and a VCUarts Alumni in other Education City communities,” Salma said.

The World is Watching Musalsalat” will run until May 13.
