The Gallery at Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar is pleased to present ‘Open Forms’, by acclaimed British artist Kate Terry.

The exhibition is scheduled from 6 November to 24 December 2013 with an opening reception on Wednesday, 6 November at 6:00pm at the Gallery at VCUQatar. The event is open to the public.

Kate Terry’s practice encompasses sculpture, installation and drawing, exploring the relationships of points, lines, angles, and forms from their defining conditions. She employs utilitarian materials with economy and restraint, disrupting our perception of depth, and of shapes and structures in space. The mainstay of Terry’s practice are site-specific installations that utilize thread and pins to transform and delineate spaces. Using ordinary thread, she explores the tension of the threads as something between tough linearity and almost imperceptible evanescence.

While her thread installations demonstrate a simultaneous reliance on and an interruption of architectural space, her sculptural works – using painted wood, perspex and thread – consider concerns of weight and presence with direct emphasis on their physicality. Her sculptures are objects that sit on the edge of installation; they are physically tethered to the spaces they occupy, tied by threads or propped, wedged and suspended from walls and corners.

Drawing on references to the rigorous regularity of Minimalism, and the basic tenets of symmographic craft constructions, Terry’s works explore the interplay of the hand crafted in relation to repetitious and serial forms and gestures. Her drawings on paper reference the fastidious conventions of technical architectural drawing to create images that are proposals or ‘plans for’ that oscillate between articulations of specific forms and spaces and explorations of unrealized and unfeasible installations.

Terry was born in Ontario, Canada in 1976. She studied sculpture at Manchester Metropolitan University, U.K. and received an MFA at the University of Guelph in Canada in 2002. Recent solo exhibitions include ‘Plan of the Present Work’, IMT Gallery (2011), ‘Reassuring Synthesis’, Small Space Gallery, Berlin (2010), ‘Empty Voluminous’, 1000000mph, London (2007), ‘Interference’, Mercer Union, Toronto, Canada (2007).

Group exhibitions include ‘Overt Exchange’, A.P.T. Gallery, London (2013); ‘Level’, Talbot Rice Gallery, Edinburgh College of Art (2012); Anschlüssel London/Berlin, Fruehsorge Contemporary Drawings, Berlin (2011); ‘Heart of Glass’, Shoreditch Town Hall, London (2008), and ‘A Life of Their Own’, curated by Richard Cork, Lismore Castle, Ireland, (2008).

Kate Terry lives and works in London, U.K.
