The entire experience refocuses a participant's attention on the micro-movements that make up day-to-day activities

“Walking – and Working – from Scores” focused on performing a past action or event based on instructions or ‘scores’ written describing that action or event when it first took place

Elena Biserna, an Italian author, scholar and curator, conducted a workshop titled “Walking – and Working – from Scores” for our students recently.

In simple terms, “Walking – and Working – from Scores” focused on performing a past action or event based on instructions or ‘scores’ written describing that action or event when it first took place.

To explain further, just as music, drama or reading poetry are performances, ‘Walking with Scores’ can be seen as a performance, but in reverse. Whereas the script or score for a drama or orchestra is written first, and then acted out as a performance, in ‘Walking with Scores’ participants reenact an action that has already been carried out and documented as detailed instructions, by a person or group of people.

The entire experience refocuses a participant’s attention on the micro-movements that make up day-to-day activities such as walking, sitting, or even crossing the road, in the process enhancing one’s self-awareness and mindfulness of his or her reactions to various situations and responses.

The workshop also explores the effect that subtle changes in movement – such as in gait or posture – can have on our psychological makeup. For instance, in the context of female participants combatting eve-teasing, how do they feel when they walk with their back straight and chin up? Does it convey a feeling of confidence, or defiance, or both? And what effect does it have on those watching?

The workshop was one of many curtain-raisers to Tasmeem Doha.  Tasmeem Doha is an international, biennial art and design conference hosted and organized by VCUarts Qatar since 2004. Each edition of Tasmeem Doha highlights a unique and contemporary theme within art and design, exploring novel concepts, methods and applications through masterclasses, discussions and workshops led by pioneers and renowned specialists in various fields.
