Spring Children’s Program 2024: Stop Motion Storytelling (Ages: 11-14)

About this class

Inventive, playful, and immersive, this course invites young teens to develop illustrative characters and engage in storytelling through stop-motion animation. The course includes group activities designed to foster creative thinking and build skills that will be applied in individual projects. All classes are based on the fundamental principles of animation and covers the technical aspects of stop motion, such as lighting and framing. Through both one-on-one and group discussions, students are encouraged to develop their unique characters and personal voice.

Class Outline

Class 1: Project 1. Character and emotion (clay)

Class 2 & 3: Project 2. Two-colour character in a three-part story progression (paper)

Class 4 & 5: Project 3. Anthropomorphism and story (paint and paper)

Class 6: Finalize projects & showcase the collection of work. Family is warmly invited.

Materials needed

Items to buy for this class

  • Watercolor Paper (some smooth, heavy weight paper)
  • Selection of colored paper
  • Heavy Colored paper (a couple of sheets of a couple of colours)
  • Clay
  • Your own iphone and tripod

On occasions, there may be some more materials to be bought and brought in if and when advised by the instructor.

Charlene Diane Kasdorf

Charlene Kasdorf is an artist, illustrator, creative thinker, and a visual literacy educator. She has illustrated research-based picture books for museums, universities, and publishing houses, in Canada, the UK, and Qatar. Charlene’s education includes a BFA, a MEd, and recently a Master’s in Museum and Gallery Practice. She has attended illustration and writing conferences and fairs in London and Abu Dhabi and has learnt from prominent authors and illustrators.
