About this class

This intensive portfolio development course is designed to meet the VCUarts Qatar admissions portfolio requirements, emphasizing creative thinking and artistic development alongside drawing skills. Participants will receive personalized feedback and practical experience, gaining insight into the vitality of arts and design education at VCUarts Qatar.

Class Outline

Day 1: Introduction & Creative Thinking

  • Overview of the course, instructor, and VCUarts Qatar.
  • Introduction to creative and critical thinking.
  • Establishing digital and analog art journal/sketchbook for idea communication.

Day 2: Principles of Art/Design & Color

  • Introduction to fundamental principles and elements of art/design.
  • Exploring the use of color in artistic expression.

Day 3: Documentation & Composition

  • Utilizing cameras for documenting ideas and artwork.
  • Digital and analog documentation of the art/process.
  • Introduction to perspective and composition.

Day 4: Model Making & Drawing Techniques

  • Introduction to model making.
  • Observational and line drawing techniques.
  • Basic and advanced value drawing.

Day 5: Time-Based Media & Final Portfolio Review

  • Introduction to time-based media.
  • Preparing the portfolio for final review.
  • Q&A session and guidance for next steps.

  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Eraser
  • Pencil sharpener
  • Black Pilot pen (fine liner)
  • 2B/4B/6B pencils (1 box)
  • Kneadable eraser
  • Tracing pad/roll
  • Sketchbook A3 and A5
  • Set of colored pencils (at least 20 colors)
  • Drawing paper A2 (sheets/pad)
  • Charcoal
  • Digital device (phone/ipad/laptop)

On occasions, there may be additional materials to be purchased, and if so,it will be advised by the instructor.

Moom Thahinah

Moom Thahinah is a graduate of Northwestern University, having earned a BSc in Media and Communications in 2022. She continued her academic journey at VCUarts Qatar, where she obtained an MFA in 2024.

Driven by a passion for interdisciplinary design, she continuously explores the boundaries of the medium of filmmaking, utilizing artistic elements to evoke emotions and convey compelling messages.

Her interests primarily lie in fiction and comedy, where she navigates the terrain of storytelling to evoke specific emotions, such as nostalgia and embracing barriers.

Her expertise extends to strategic communication, to craft impactful narratives and forge meaningful connections with audiences.
